Centipedes and millipedes are myriapods, distantly related arthropods that share a dependence on moist environments. Both are primarily outdoor organisms that live in soil, leaf litter, mulch, and organic debris, where they serve useful ecological roles as predators of smaller arthropods and decomposers of organic matter. Their presence inside a structure indicates that the moisture conditions or organic material that normally sustains them outdoors is available in or immediately adjacent to the building. Millipedes are the more commonly encountered indoor invader. They do not bite and are harmless to people, but can produce defensive secretions that irritate skin on contact. Harborage sites including mulch beds, leaf litter accumulations, and wood piles near the foundation receive attention as concentrations of these pests close to the building create pressure regardless of perimeter treatment.

Moisture management is often the most impactful long-term intervention for properties with persistent centipede and millipede problems. Crawlspace vapor barrier installation or repair, downspout extension away from the foundation, grading adjustments that direct surface water away from the building, and correction of plumbing leaks that create moisture in basement or crawlspace areas all address the root cause rather than just the symptom.
